Chapter Seven

By the time that Bunic paused for a drink of his tea, both of my hands were clasped over my mouth, and I knew that my eyes were as large as dinner plates.

Not because Colby and Rafe were caught en flagrente delecto in the butler’s pantry. Please. Since Colby’s first heat, they’ve spent every available minute humping like bunnies in a Viagra factory. I won’t even go to Wal-mart with them anymore after…never mind that. I was surprised that they had even managed to begin the investigation into the bear shifter from the last Omega Auction but, well, that’s a story for another time, isn’t it?

Anyway, Snezhana and a big hairy man in a skimpy mermaid costume? That, on the other hand, had my undivided attention!

Bunic cleared his throat, pulling me from my woolgathering. “You recall what I said earlier about the difficulty with family?”

I nodded, and he continued…

Harry and Spencer exchanged glances, and Harry sighed deeply.

“Uncle? May I have a private word?”

Snezhana rose silently and followed his nephew to the office on the upper floor, sinking onto the leather sofa and staring blankly at the wall.

“Ahem,” Harry cleared his throat. “Forgive me, Uncle, I am aware that you are well past the age of needing anyone’s approval for your, ahem, relationships, but, ah, in the future, it would be appreciated if I was aware that you had, ahem, company in the castle?”

Snezhana’s gaze slowly left the wall to focus on his nephew.

“I can assure you that I am not acquainted with that…being that is in my room,” he said loftily, his thin nose hiking up in the air.

Silence sat heavy in the room between the two shifters as Harry turned this new revelation over in his mind before finally inhaling deeply and pressing on.

“Are you sure?” Harry asked hesitantly. “When I spoke with him in your room, Vlad - that’s his name, by the way - said that you ordered him from a Russian mail order mate catalog?”

“What?” Snezhana gasped, his eyes wide. “That can’t be! My mate isn’t supposed to be here until tomorrow, and is supposed to be a female!”

“I see. You ordered a female mate named…Vlad?”

Snezhana shrugged helplessly. “I assumed it was a nickname for Vladina.”

“I see.” Harry fought back a smile. “Perhaps you should go have a word with him?”

“Of course, Nephew,” Snezhana eased himself to his feet stiffly. “If it isn’t too much trouble, may I request that a room be made available for his use?”

“You won’t be sharing your rooms..” Harry trailed off at the sour look on his uncle's face. “Of course,” Harry agreed quickly, following his uncle to the door. “I’ll have Dragos make the arrangements.”

With an imperious nod of his balding head, Snezhana strode toward the staircase and began the descent to the great room and the well-stocked liquor cabinet it held. If he was going to converse with that being in his room, a few sips of brandy would be needed to steel his nerves first.

Christof trotted down the third-floor hall, his soft pads whispering over the stone floor.
